BASIC STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE EGG PRODUCTION IN BROILER

Introduction

Poultry farming, especially egg production, plays a vital role in the livelihoods of millions of farmers and rural households globally. Eggs are a high-quality protein source, economical to produce, and in steady demand. However, ensuring consistent and high egg yield from poultry requires effective farm management practices. This article outlines practical and scientifically backed methods to enhance egg production in both small- and large-scale poultry operations.

  1. Nutritional Management

Nutrition is the cornerstone of egg production. Inadequate or imbalanced feed can lead to a significant drop in laying performance. It comprises balanced diet, supplementation of feed additives and clean water supply.

A layer hen’s diet must be formulated in balanced proportion to meet energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements. Layers typically require: Crude Protein: 16-18% for optimum egg production, metabolizable Energy: 2700–2900 kcal/kg, Calcium: 3.5-4.0% (critical for eggshell formation), Phosphorus: 0.35–0.45%, Vitamins: A, D3, E, and B-complex are essential, especially during peak laying periods.

In addition to balanced diet Feed additives are also advocated to improve production potential of layers viz., amino acids (methionine, lysine) support growth and egg size, Enzymes improve nutrient absorption, probiotics and prebiotics enhance gut health and immunity. Water is important ingredients of balanced diet accordingly clean, cool water must be available at all times. Water deprivation, even for a few hours, can reduce egg output significantly.

  1. Breed Selection and Flock Management

Selection of right breed as per geographical location and production demand is imperative for sustained production. Further, scientific flock management is also imperative for optimum productivity.

High yielding layer breed shall be selected as genetically superior breeds is a prerequisite for high egg production. Examples includes: WhiteLeghorn, Hy-Line Brown, ISA Brown, Babcock and other commercial hybrids. These breeds may produce 280–320 eggs per year under scientific managerial conditions.Flock Uniformity is also crucial aspect of poultry farm.Uniform body weight and size of layers reduce housing stress and facilitate for synchronized laying cycles. Birds should be housed and managed according to age and weight categories so that adverse effect on productivity can be mitigated.

  1. Lighting Management

In poultry, photoperiod has a major role in regulating reproductive hormones and subsequently productive potential as well. Thus, lighting management is critical for reproductive and laying cyclicity.

Photoperiod is significant factor for reproduction.Usually hens need 16–17 hours of light daily to sustain peak egg production and supplemental artificial lighting is necessary during short daylight months. Use warm white bulbs (40–60 watt) placed strategically to provide uniform illumination. Light intensity should be monitored cautiously as ideal light intensity is 10-15 lux for layer poultry. Sudden changes in light duration should be avoided as it may interrupt the laying cycle.

  1. Health and Biosecurity

Healthy birds are productive birds. Diseases and parasites can drastically affect overall health status of poultry and eventually reduce egg output and cause economic losses as well. Therefore, strict preventive measures are advised to control infectious disease burden and parasitic infestation as well.

Regular vaccination against common viral and bacterial infections, scheduled deworming and rigid biosecurity measures are critical for sustaining poultry health for their optimum egg production. Scientific vaccination protocol according to geographical location and outbreak incidence should be implemented in poultry farm. These are common poultry disease against which vaccination is warranted. eg. Newcastle Disease, Infectious Bronchitis, Marek’s Disease, Fowl Pox, Gumboro (IBD) etc. Ecto and endoparasites are also causing sever distress to poultry and deteriorating their general health. Further, weak and debilitated poultry will be out of production and sometime it may be life threatening too. Hence, scheduled deworming is necessary to get rid out of this parasitic burden. Simultaneously housing sanitization and control of ectoparasites (lice/mite) are also essential for better health and egg production. Qualified veterinarian or poultry expert may be contacted for scientific deworming of poultry farm.

Strict biosecurity measures are necessary to prevent any entry of infectious and contagious microbial agent. Various level biosecurity measures may be adopted based on scale of poultry farm. Such as; limit farm visitors and equipment sharing, disinfect feed and water containers regularly, use foot dips, farm gates, and clothing barriers etc.

  1. Environmental and Housing Management

Comfortable and hygienic housing always ensures better health and laying performance. This may be enrolled through proper shelter and ventilation, avoiding overcrowding, proper nest box management.

Ventilation and temperature are critical parameters for poultry farm. Optimal temperature for better survival of layers is 18-24°C and excessive heat or cold stress reduces egg production. In addition, proper ventilation reduces ammonia build up in layer house and maintains air quality for good health. Stocking Density should be monitored as overcrowding of poultry is harmful in many ways thus it is essentially suggested to follow scientific housing and stocking of layers. Ideally 4-6 birds per square meter in deep litter systems is good for production as overcrowding leads to weather pecking, stress, and reduced feed intake.

Total number of nest box and its maintenance is important for uninterrupted and safe production of eggs. Provide 1 nest box per 5 hens to reduce floor eggs. Keep nests clean and comfortable to encourage its use.

  1. Stress Reduction and Molting Management

Managemental and environmental stress should be controlled for better productivity of layers. Therefore, frequent handling of birds should be avoided, sudden or regular noise should be prevented and abrupt environmental changes must be discouraged. Accordingly, consistent feeding and lighting schedules shall be ensured.

Molting in poultry may be practiced to increase productivity. Under the supervision of poultry expert molting may induced to rejuvenate hens for a second laying cycle using modulate feed and light. Natural molting should be supported by high-quality feed and rest.

  1. Record Keeping and Performance Monitoring

Proper record keeping and regular monitoring over production performance is imperative to make necessary intervention. Thus, it is advised to maintain records related to feed consumption, mortality, egg production, health and vaccination. Keen observation of these records will helps to identifying issues and making informed management decisions.

  1. Culling Unproductive Birds

Regular evaluation of flock helps to screen out unproductive, aged, chronic ill, low weight birds and non-layers. Timely, stock out of these birds are necessary to keep farm economic viable as it reduces feed cost per egg and improves overall efficiency.

Improving egg production in poultry is a multifactorial process requiring attention to breed, nutrition, health, environment, and management. Even small changes such as; improved lighting or water management may leads to significant gains in productivity. Farmers should regularly consult veterinarians or poultry experts to optimize practices for their specific conditions. By adopting these science-based methods, both smallholders and commercial poultry producers can ensure higher yields, better bird welfare, and greater economic returns.
