Maharashtra Becomes the First State to Grant Agricultural Status to Livestock Farming

In a landmark policy reform, the Government of Maharashtra has become the first in the country to grant agricultural status to livestock farming. The decision, approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet, aims to bring substantial relief and economic benefits to farmers engaged in dairy, poultry, goat, sheep, and pig rearing.

Under this new policy, livestock-based activities will now be treated at par with traditional agriculture, enabling livestock farmers to access key benefits such as:

  • Agricultural electricity rates for poultry farms (up to 25,000 broilers / 50,000 layers), hatcheries (up to 45,000 capacity), dairy units (up to 100 animals), goat/sheep farms (up to 500), and pig farms (up to 200).
  • Eligibility for solar pumps and solar equipment subsidies on par with agricultural norms.
  • Interest relief of up to 4% on livestock farming project loans through Kisan Credit Cards, like the Panjabrao Deshmukh Interest Subsidy Scheme.
  • Local tax relief, with Gram Panchayats instructed to tax livestock and poultry farms at agricultural rates.

This progressive move is expected to boost sustainable farming, generate rural employment, and enhance the economic resilience of livestock farmers across the state. With nearly 75 lakh families in Maharashtra engaged in animal husbandry, the policy is anticipated to create a significant positive impact on the sector.

Further implementation details are awaited.

Heartiest congratulations to all livestock farmers on this historic decision!
